South Valley Leadership Academy Chess Program 14 Week Course- Spring 2025

In the PowerChess program, students can expect to learn the foundational concepts of the game of chess, tactical patterns, checkmating patterns, opening ideas, and endgame ideas, and play weekly tournament-style chess games. Each class will have a 30-minute lesson on one of these concepts, which will feature group discussion, solving chess puzzles as a class, and watching a short multimedia presentation. Following the lesson, students will play a weekly tournament-style chess game against fellow students to practice the ideas they are learning. 

To promote at-home learning, all students in the PowerChess program will receive a premium GOLD membership to the world’s largest children’s chess website, chesskid.com (a value of $30.00). Chesskid.com allows students to practice the skills they are learning in the PowerChess program at home by studying lessons, solving chess puzzles, and playing online chess games with students from across the globe. Students should expect to spend 1hr practicing on chesskid.com every week to help them master the material covered in the PowerChess program.
